If you have Pell Grants and/or student loans, you may have excess financial aid that you can use for other things in The College Store like purchasing a laptop computer, meal plan card, or optional supplies. Generally, the concept of excess financial aid will only apply to students with a PELL grant and/or student loans, but here’s the basic math…
Awarded Financial Aid – Tuition, Fees, and Student Account Balance = Excess Financial Aid
Award amounts for both PELL grants and student loans depend on the number of credit hours you are taking for the semester.
PELL Grant:
- 12+ credit hours, 100%
- 11 credit hours, 92%
- 10 credit hours, 83%
- 9 credit hours, 75%
- 8 credit hours, 67%
- 7 credit hours, 58%
- 6 credit hours, 50%
- 5 credit hours, 42%
- 4 credit hours, 33%
- 3 credit hours, 25%
- 2 credit hours, 17%
- 1 credit hour, 8%
All financial aid awards are initially based on full-time enrollment (12 or more credits) and may be adjusted for changes in enrollment. This means that if you are initially in 12 hours and drop to 9 hours, the amount of aid you are eligible to receive could be affected.
You may review your approved aid by logging into myTRCC and navigating to the SelfService Card. Use the Financial Information tab on the left sidebar navigation, Student Finance, and Account Summary. Detail on the semester you are currently in and you will find a detailed list of your charges and anticipated aid.
As a general rule if the number showing on your balance due for the semester is a negative number, this would indicate funds that will be refunded to you or funds that would be available for use in The College Store. However, due to guidelines for use of funds only excess Pell and/or Loans may be used for purchases in The College Store.
